Microgrid and Smart Energy Management at the Prague Sports Complex

Comprehensive energy management combining on-site generation, demand control and monitoring of pools, HVAC and EV charging to improve efficiency and stability.

Implementation of FLOWBOX EMOS in a municipal sports facility – comprehensive energy management for pools, sports venues and electromobility.

About the Client

The Pražačka Sports and Recreation Complex is one of the key sports facilities of Prague 3. It includes an indoor and outdoor swimming pool with attractions, a baby pool, sauna, gym, MMA sports hall, outdoor artificial turf pitch with an athletics track, volleyball, footvolley and beach courts, a streetball court, a new skatepark, and infrastructure for electromobility.

The area operates a wide range of technologies with different schedules and high energy requirements — consuming approximately 256 MWh of electricity, 945 MWh of gas, and 11,000 m³ of water per year.

Project Goals and Key Benefits

The goal was to implement smart energy management across the entire Pražačka complex so that all major technologies - pools, HVAC systems, heating, cogeneration, photovoltaics, battery storage and electromobility - could operate in a coordinated manner and automatically adjust their performance based on real-time conditions.

The microgrid acts as a central control system that manages energy consumption, generation and storage, supporting an efficient and sustainable operation.

This enables the complex to:

  • reduce demand peaks and maintain stable operation,
  • lower the overall energy intensity of its technologies,
  • maximise the use of on-site energy generation and reduce strain on the distribution grid,
  • access real-time insight and control over its entire energy system,
  • remain easily scalable for future technological expansion.

The Pražačka project now serves as a reference example of modern energy management in a municipal sports facility.

Main Implementation Challenges

  • A wide mix of technologies with different consumption priorities
  • Integration with existing building automation systems
  • Strong seasonal variability
  • Need to reduce demand peaks and respond to grid conditions
  • Maximum use of on-site generation — cogeneration, PV, battery storage
  • Requirements for secure data communication and remote supervision

FLOWBOX EMOS Solution

FLOWBOX EMOS operates as the central energy management system of the complex, connecting all critical technologies in real time and controlling their operation to ensure energy is used as efficiently as possible.
The system works with priorities, available on-site generation and the current state of the distribution grid.

Key Capabilities

  • Centralised Energy Control
A single control centre coordinates all energy-relevant technologies across the complex.
  • Real-Time Consumption Monitoring
Electricity, gas, heat and water consumption is measured at short intervals and visualised in clear dashboards.
  • Management of On-Site Energy Sources
Cogeneration, PV and battery storage are controlled to maximise the use of locally produced energy.
  • Demand Peak Reduction
Technology performance is automatically regulated based on priorities and available energy, stabilising both the grid and operational costs.
  • Thermal Management
Heating and pool water heating are controlled according to actual needs and outdoor conditions.
  • Pool Technology Control
Attractions, water treatment and related systems are optimised for stable and energy-efficient operation.
  • HVAC (Air Technology) Control
Ventilation units adjust their output according to occupancy and operational conditions.
  • Electromobility Integration
EV and e-bike chargers are monitored and controlled to avoid overloading the grid and to utilise available capacity.
  • Remote Supervision and Visualisation
Facility managers can monitor and control the entire complex from anywhere via a secure web interface.
  • Alarms and Diagnostics
The system detects faults and anomalies immediately and alerts operators.
  • Integration with External Systems
The solution communicates with existing automation systems and the distribution grid.
  • Data Archiving and Analytics
Long-term data storage supports trend analysis and further optimisation.

What the Client Says

“Pražačka operates extensive and interconnected technologies, which naturally leads to occasional faults. The FLOWBOX EMOS energy management system helps us significantly — it alerts us to any deviation in real time, allowing us to resolve issues immediately. Over the long term, the system is essential for planning, highlighting areas where we can be even more efficient and cost-effective. Overall, EMOS is a clear benefit for the complex and delivers measurable savings.”

Conclusion

The Pražačka project demonstrates how intelligent energy management can substantially improve the efficiency, stability and self-sufficiency of a municipal sports facility. FLOWBOX EMOS acts as an intelligent system that understands the behaviour of all energy flows in real time and actively manages technologies to ensure reliable, economical and sustainable operation.
