What is the difference between an energy audit and ISO 50001?

An energy audit is a one-off assessment of energy consumption that recommends improvement measures. Under the Czech legal framework described here, mandatory energy audits must be repeated every four years. ISO 50001, by contrast, is an ongoing energy management system that continuously measures, evaluates and improves energy performance against an established energy baseline.

Put simply, an energy audit identifies where you could save energy; ISO 50001 provides a framework for achieving and maintaining those savings. An audit typically ends with a report whose recommendations may receive no further follow-up. ISO 50001 establishes an ongoing process with defined responsibilities, objectives and documented results.

Under the amendment to Czech Act No. 406/2000 Coll., effective from 1 January 2026, companies consuming between 2,778 and 23,611 MWh per year can replace a mandatory energy audit with a certified ISO 50001 energy management system. Above 23,611 MWh per year, ISO 50001 certification is mandatory. For companies with multiple sites, ISO 50001 can be more cost-effective over the long term and deliver actual savings alongside recommendations.

How does an ISO 50001 certification audit work?

An ISO 50001 certification audit is carried out by an independent, accredited certification body, such as TÜV, Bureau Veritas or DNV. It consists of two stages:

  • Stage 1 — readiness review: The auditor reviews the documentation, system scope, energy baseline, energy performance indicators (EnPIs) and the organisation’s readiness.
  • Stage 2 — on-site certification audit: The auditor checks that the system works in practice, examining data, processes, corrective actions, management reviews and progress towards objectives.

After a successful audit, the organisation receives an ISO 50001 certificate valid for three years. Annual surveillance audits follow, with recertification after three years.

How often does ISO 50001 certification need to be renewed?

An ISO 50001 certificate is valid for three years. An annual surveillance audit covers part of the organisation, followed by recertification after three years. The energy management system must therefore remain operational throughout the certification cycle.

Getting started with FLOWBOX ISO 50001

Does FLOWBOX ISO 50001 replace the entire energy management system?

No. FLOWBOX ISO 50001 does not replace the energy management system or the organisation’s responsibilities. It supports the system’s digital management, documentation and maintenance. ISO 50001 still requires people, decisions and clear accountability; the software simplifies and automates much of the supporting work.

The module handles activities that can be digitised: data collection, EnPI calculations, tracking performance against the energy baseline, deviation alerts, corrective action records, reporting and audit trails.

Activities such as setting objectives, deciding on investments and conducting management reviews remain the organisation’s responsibility, supported by better information.

The result is a functioning energy management system with practical value beyond certification.

Do we need FLOWBOX EMOS installed before using the module?

No. FLOWBOX ISO 50001 is a module within the FLOWBOX EMOS platform, but you do not need to have the platform installed beforehand. The platform and module are deployed together during implementation.

The module supports companies at any stage of digitalisation. It can collect data automatically from connected meters or accept manual entries from invoices, meter readings or estimates. Manual input is a fully supported way of working.

If you already use FLOWBOX EMOS for energy monitoring, solar PV, batteries or electric vehicle charging, the ISO 50001 module can be added to use the data already available in the system.

What data does FLOWBOX ISO 50001 need at the start?

To get started, you need a basic overview of your energy consumption. This typically includes invoices and meter readings for electricity, gas, heat and transport fuels, ideally covering the past three years to support the establishment of an energy baseline.

Additional sources can be added over time, including live data from production lines and meters, a meter register, operating parameters that influence energy consumption - known as relevant variables - and data from billing systems.

FLOWBOX can work with incomplete data and connect additional sources gradually, so you do not need everything in place before you begin.

Do we need an existing energy monitoring system?

No. FLOWBOX ISO 50001 can start with the data you already have, whether that means manual meter readings, invoices or live production data.

You do not need to digitise an entire facility first. The module combines automated and manually entered data, with additional sources connected over time. Implementing ISO 50001 can itself help you build energy monitoring in a structured and purposeful way.

Can production supervisors and managers use FLOWBOX, or is it only for energy managers?

FLOWBOX is designed for energy managers, production supervisors and company management. Each role has its own view:

  • Energy managers oversee the entire system.
  • Production and operations managers track the indicators relevant to their areas.
  • Company leadership receives an overview to support decision-making.

Users see the information relevant to their responsibilities, which supports collaboration and faster responses to deviations.

How does FLOWBOX differ from standard energy monitoring or Excel?

Standard energy monitoring shows consumption. Managing energy under ISO 50001 also involves energy baselines, EnPIs, objectives, corrective actions, documentation and an audit trail.

Which meters and communication protocols does FLOWBOX support?

FLOWBOX is built around direct integration with metering infrastructure. Standard connections include Modbus RTU/TCP and OPC UA, with OCPP used for EV charging.

These connections allow FLOWBOX to collect data automatically, without manual transcription.

What are EnPIs and energy baselines in ISO 50001?

An energy baseline is a reference used to compare energy performance. It is established using a period of normal operation that should not be distorted by exceptional events or unusual operating conditions.

An energy performance indicator (EnPI) is a metric that describes energy performance, such as energy consumption per unit of production.

ISO 50001 uses energy baselines and EnPIs to track performance and demonstrate continual improvement. FLOWBOX automatically calculates and tracks energy baselines and EnPIs, including alerts when performance deviates from the target.

Which types of energy does the module track?

FLOWBOX ISO 50001 tracks all relevant energy types: electricity, natural gas, externally supplied heat and fuels such as diesel, petrol and LPG. It also includes electricity generated by an on-site solar PV system and consumed at the facility.

Not every energy type needs to be tracked at the same frequency, such as monthly. Following the assessment of significant energy uses (SEUs), data for energy types not classified as significant can be entered annually for the SEU reassessment.

What are significant energy uses (SEUs), and how does FLOWBOX manage them?

Significant energy uses (SEUs) are processes or equipment that account for a substantial share of energy consumption — typically those that together represent roughly the first 80% of consumption for a given energy type. These areas offer the greatest savings potential, and identifying SEUs is a required step under ISO 50001.

In FLOWBOX, you identify SEUs by entering processes and linking them to meters, whether connected directly to FLOWBOX or supplied with manual data from invoices and readings. The system automatically creates a Pareto chart and identifies the processes representing your significant energy uses.

The data is then reused in functions such as correlation analysis, EnPI and energy baseline calculations, and monitoring. This avoids repeated data entry and keeps information in one place for audits.

Is a main electricity meter enough for ISO 50001, or do we need submeters?

A main electricity meter alone is not sufficient. ISO 50001 requires individual significant energy uses to be identified and monitored continuously. This calls for separate measurement of uses such as cooling, heating, lighting, production equipment and EV charging.

Without submetering, EnPIs cannot be calculated reliably, SEUs identified or an audit trail substantiated. FLOWBOX is designed to collect data from these individual metering points.

At what intervals does FLOWBOX collect and store data?

ISO 50001 requires at least monthly data to evaluate energy performance. Shorter collection intervals are useful for identifying deviations promptly and supporting effective monitoring.

FLOWBOX allows the collection interval to be configured by device type. Data can typically be collected every 15 minutes, or every minute for some devices. We help you choose a suitable interval for the energy types and equipment being measured.

Does FLOWBOX manage meter records and calibration?

The module includes a meter register. It records each device’s description, location, energy type, data source, reading frequency and responsible person.

Integration, reporting and everyday operation

Can FLOWBOX ISO 50001 data also support ESG and CSRD reporting?

Yes. Data collected for ISO 50001 - energy consumption by type, EnPIs, energy baselines and documented savings - can also be used for ESG reporting and reporting under the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), particularly for energy and Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions.

Keeping consistent data with an audit trail in one place avoids duplicate collection. It simplifies ISO 50001 certification and the preparation of supporting information for sustainability reporting, tenders and financing, where energy and emissions data are increasingly requested.

Can FLOWBOX connect to ERP, WMS and production systems?

Yes. FLOWBOX can integrate with enterprise resource planning (ERP), warehouse management systems (WMS), production systems and other business applications.

Yes. An ISO 50001 energy management system can cover multiple sites within one organisation under a single certificate.

How does FLOWBOX handle deviations and corrective actions?

FLOWBOX continuously compares actual energy consumption with the energy baseline and the defined target. It sends an alert when a configured threshold is exceeded.

In the extended mode, exceeding a threshold requires the cause and corrective action to be recorded. The action is then tracked through to resolution, including an assessment of its effectiveness and supporting documentation for auditors and management meetings.

This supports the management of nonconformities under Clause 10 of ISO 50001.

Will a certification body accept FLOWBOX as an audit tool?

FLOWBOX is designed to generate supporting documentation in the structure auditors need, from SEU identification and EnPIs to measurement and verification (M&V) and the management review report under Clause 9.3.

ISO 50001 legal requirements in the Czech Republic

Which companies must obtain ISO 50001 certification under the Czech rules effective from 2026?

The amendment to Czech Act No. 406/2000 Coll., introduced by Act No. 87/2025 Coll. as part of the Lex OZE III package, took effect on 1 January 2026. It transposes the EU Energy Efficiency Directive (EU) 2023/1791.

The determining factor is average annual final energy consumption over the previous three calendar years, assessed across the entire entity registered under one Czech company identification number (IČO), including linked companies with an ownership share above 50%:

  • Above 2,778 MWh per year (10 TJ): An energy audit is required every four years, or it can be replaced by ISO 50001 certification.
  • Above 23,611 MWh per year (85 TJ): A certified ISO 50001 energy management system is mandatory within two years of the obligation arising. Companies already exceeding the threshold must comply by 31 December 2027 at the latest.

The calculation includes electricity, natural gas, heat and transport fuels across all sites.

What is the penalty for failing to meet the Czech ISO 50001 obligation?

Under Czech Act No. 406/2000 Coll., failure to implement and certify the required energy management system can result in a fine of up to CZK 5,000,000.
